As a father of 3 boys all under the age of 10 I truly do get it. I totally understand the initial desire of blaming the tool and not the tool’s handler. When I went to my oldest son’s school to pick him up I sat in my car waiting and looking at all the other parents waiting to pick up their most precious cargo as well and for a second I thought of a America free of guns and of gun violence. For me the moment was fast-fleeting and I immediately came back to reality. The reality is the bad guys have always and will always find a way to pull off their mischievous deeds. America does not need gun control, it need more guns in the hands of the right citizens.
The talking heads on the cable networks have been in non stop “gun control” mode since the slaughter at Sandy Hook Elementary. Even some conservative members of the House and Senate have opened the door to the possibility of an “assault weapon” ban. Not only is that talk unconstitutional, it is more importantly delusional. Take a look around today and you will see an America who is already exhausted to the point of surrender on the “War on drugs”, we do not have the stomach for another “War on guns”. Whatever gun you ban today would be available to evil on the black market tomorrow. All a ban does is take the weapon out of the hands of the good people and in turn gives a huge tactical advantage to the villains in our society. The government would have to respond to this newly formed black market with force and another internal war in America will begin with deadly results.
So if bans are not the solution then what is? Well, since there is no way to predict when and where somebody might snap, perhaps it is time to encourage America to protect itself by becoming responsible gun owners. Here is the dirty little secret the drive by media and the haters of the 2nd Amendment won’t tell you, guns have throughout our history saved many lives. Just this past week in San Antonio, an off duty sheriff saved the lives of dozens of people when she shot a man getting ready to spray a movie theater with bullets. There was the story about the young man who was practicing his 2nd Amendment rights by pulling out his gun on a madman who was shooting up a mall. The gunman saw that he was in the man’s sights and shot himself first thus ending his threat and saving countless lives. These stories happen all the time, but unless you really look for them, you will never hear about it.
There are other things we can do as well. Improving how we handle mental health issues, holding our schools accountable by asking them to create emergency plans for shootings, teaching our children right from wrong, and bringing God back into schools, would all have a positive effect on improving our children’s and grand children’s safety in school. Perhaps it is time to start talking about either armed security or arming school officials as well. On Friday December 14th our country lost 20 beautiful little angels and 6 brave adults to a madman at Sandy Hook Elementary. Do not allow our country to lose its freedoms and its ability to protect itself as well. We owe these victims a lot more than that.

A sick madman took the lives of these beautiful souls. Stop blaming guns and start looking for real solutions. We owe these victims that.
